The Capability Pledge is the promise a capability owner makes to the rest of the organisation and its stakeholders about how that capability will conduct its business and deliver its contribution.
It is the mission statement of the capability.
It sets out what the capability exists to provide, who it serves, the outcomes it must support, and the standards of behaviour, quality, reliability and stewardship others can expect from it.
In Adapt, Survive and Flourish, the Capability Pledge matters because capabilities are not just boxes on a model. They represent work that other people depend on. A capability must therefore be understood not only in structural terms, but also in terms of its promise to the wider system.

Why a Capability Pledge Matters
Organisations often suffer when teams, functions or departments optimise their own work without understanding how others depend on them.

Creating a Capability Pledge is also a learning practice.
It helps people make tacit assumptions explicit. It brings different interpretations into the open. It reveals where expectations are unclear, where responsibilities overlap, and where the organisation has been relying on informal knowledge or goodwill to hold things together.
In this sense, the Capability Pledge helps socialise the Business Capability Model. It gives people a practical way to recognise their own work in the model and connect that work to stakeholder outcomes.
