Persona

Josh is a university student and emerging technology practitioner who joins NaturFlourish as a permanent part-time employee while finishing his studies. Bright, enthusiastic, and eager to contribute, he brings curiosity, technical confidence, and a natural affinity for AI tools. At the Tuesday Night Survivors Club, he is affectionately known as “the robot” — the AI system he helps operate, question, and improve.

Narrative Role

Josh serves as the keeper of the robot, but his deeper role is to demonstrate that AI’s usefulness depends on the quality of the questions asked. Initially, he views the AI as a potent tool for generating responses. However, through collaboration with Bruno and Mallory on the Business Capability Model, he realises that the true skill lies not in getting the machine to respond, but in learning how to formulate the right questions, test the answers, and identify what remains unasked.

Josh views the story through a next-generation perspective. Free from outdated organisational habits, he is still developing his awareness of potential risks. This position makes him an excellent learner. He observes how swiftly a believable AI-generated model can appear convincing, and recognizes the danger if people accept it as truth before verifying it against real-world data.

His role becomes particularly critical when he recognises that AI practice, operations, and ethics are interconnected rather than separate fields. Effective questions should be rooted in practical work, tested in Gemba, and communicated back to those who bear the consequences.

Narrative Contribution

Introduces

  • AI as a practical sensemaking tool
  • The risks of treating AI output as authority
  • Prompting as inquiry, not command
  • The next generation’s relationship with technology

Demonstrates

  • Curiosity
  • Technical fluency
  • Humility in learning
  • Responsiveness to mentorship
  • The ability to recognise when a tool is helping people think rather than replacing thought

Challenges

  • The assumption that AI-generated answers are neutral
  • The temptation to move too quickly from output to decision
  • The belief that technical fluency is enough without ethical and operational grounding

Enables

  • Bruno to accelerate and refine the BCM work
  • Mallory to test the relationship between question, answer and accountability
  • The group to see AI as part of inquiry discipline rather than a shortcut to certainty
  • A bridge between emerging technology and organisational learning

Discovers

  • That answers depend on the quality of the questions
  • That AI can expose assumptions as well as generate content
  • That models must be tested by the people who live with their consequences
  • That the most important work is not using the robot, but learning how not to be fooled by it
Learning Journey

Josh starts as an enthusiastic young technologist eager to apply AI in real organisational tasks. He soon realises that the machine can generate valuable structure, but its responses are influenced by the questions posed and overlooked assumptions. Working with Bruno and Mallory, he learns that the quality of AI results relies on the rigour of human questioning.

His understanding deepens as BCM work shifts from the boardroom to Gemba. Josh realizes that a model isn’t truly validated just because it appears logical on a screen. It only becomes meaningful when tested against the actual people, processes, and outcomes it claims to represent. When Helen divides “Handle Deviations” into “Assess Deviations” and “Authorise Restart,” Josh sees that this change is more than structural; it is ethical. BCM not only maps out workflow but also clarifies who is responsible for the resulting consequences.

Josh’s journey illustrates the evolution of AI from clever prompting to responsible engagement. He becomes a symbol of the new generation understanding that technology complements judgment, not replaces it. When used effectively, it encourages people to think more critically, ask better questions, and foster shared understanding. If misused, it can falsely produce the appearance of certainty. Josh learns to maintain the usefulness of the AI by ensuring humans remain responsible.
