📝 Ba: A shared context or space where relationships, knowledge, learning, and meaning emerge through interaction.
The Japanese concept of Ba was introduced into management thinking by Nonaka and Konno to describe the environments in which knowledge is created, shared, and applied. Ba is not simply a physical location. It may be a workplace, a meeting, a project team, an online community, or any setting where people interact and learn together.
Ba emerges through relationships, trust, shared purpose, dialogue, and experience. It provides the conditions for knowledge creation and collective learning to occur.
In Adapt, Survive and Flourish, Ba can be understood as the social and relational environment that enables learning, sensemaking, knowledge creation, and adaptive capacity. The Tuesday Night Survivors Club meeting in the dining room of the Hammond Inn exemplifies Ba.
