Governance Ownership involves being accountable for maintaining governance that is visible, coherent, relevant, effective, and aligned with purpose, ethics, the actual situation, and expected outcomes. It prevents governance from turning into a fragmented collection of policies, controls, committees, and reporting duties.
The Governance Owner is responsible for preserving the integrity of the entire governance framework and ensuring all components function collaboratively. However, Governance Ownership does not mean handling every decision; instead, it involves ensuring that decision rights, responsibilities, principles, stewardship roles, and escalation procedures are clear and functioning well. Additionally, it entails reviewing governance against operational realities and consequences.
When governance no longer suits current conditions, the Governance Owner must challenge, update, and realign it.
