Stewardship is the responsible care of something entrusted to us—a capability, relationship, institution, place or shared future. It recognises that having authority or use today does not give us an unlimited right to consume, neglect or diminish what others will depend upon tomorrow.
A steward protects what remains valuable, changes what no longer serves and strengthens what must endure. Stewardship is therefore not passive preservation; it requires judgement about what to sustain, what to renew and what to leave behind.
Unlike ownership, stewardship carries an obligation beyond the present holder’s interests or tenure. Its test is not simply whether value was extracted, but whether what was entrusted remains healthy, useful and capable of being passed on.
