Regenerative Capacity is the ability of a system not only to adapt to changing conditions, but also to restore and increase its capacity for continuing renewal.

Human capital provides:

Human capability becomes isolated when:

- conflicting perspectives cannot be explored,
- or people lack the authority and psychological safety to act.
Strong relationships are also insufficient when they become disconnected from:
- diverse knowledge,
- practical competence,

- ecological conditions,
- and operational consequences.
Regenerative Capacity requires capability, relationships and reality to remain connected.
Regenerative Capacity and Social Ecology
A healthy social ecology allows different forms of knowledge and experience to encounter one another.
This includes:
- scientific and technical knowledge,
- operational experience,
- stakeholder perspectives,
- local and Indigenous knowledge,
- organisational memory,
- ecological signals,
- and reflective judgement.
These perspectives are interpreted through relationships, institutions, practices and shared meaning.
When the social ecology is healthy, people can:
- notice changing conditions,
- challenge assumptions,
- learn from consequence,
- coordinate action,
- and sustain responsibility over time.
Regenerative Capacity and Resilience
Resilience enables a system to withstand disruption and continue.
Regenerative Capacity asks a further question:
Does the system emerge with an increased ability to learn, adapt and renew?
A system may be resilient because people continually compensate for its weaknesses.
A regenerative system develops the relationships, knowledge and capabilities needed to reduce that dependence and strengthen its foundations.
Resilience protects continuity.
Regenerative Capacity increases future potential.
Building Regenerative Capacity
Regenerative Capacity develops through:
- shared purpose,
- trusted relationships,
- diverse participation,
- continuing learning,
- connection to Gemba,
- informed judgement,
- protected experimentation,
- reflective practice,
- stewardship,
- and attention to ecological and social consequence.
It cannot be delivered through a single intervention.
It emerges as people, organisations and places learn together.
