Scout Mindset is about actively seeking the most accurate understanding of reality instead of defending a preferred stance. The term comes from Julia Galef (Galef, 2021).
It involves curiosity, humility, and testing assumptions through evidence, experience, diverse perspectives, and consequences. The goal is to see things clearly, not to prove oneself right.
This mindset contrasts with defensive thinking, which filters information to protect existing beliefs, decisions, or identities. It promotes noticing contradictions, exploring disconfirming views, and changing course as needed by reality.
In governance, Scout Mindset fosters informed judgment, organisational awareness, and honesty by encouraging decision-makers to stay open to what they might have overlooked or misunderstood.
