Data Ownership
Data ownership means naming who is accountable for keeping a body of data understandable, trustworthy, appropriately used and protected throughout its life.
The owner does not personally perform every data task or possess the data as private property. The role sets definitions and quality expectations, establishes boundaries for access and use, resolves disputes and ensures that necessary stewardship is in place.
Without clear ownership, meanings diverge, quality deteriorates and difficult decisions drift between teams. Data may then be used widely while nobody can explain whether it is reliable, appropriate or safe.
