Managing complexity means working sensibly when causes and effects are unclear, people see the situation differently and nobody can know in advance exactly what will happen.
A complicated problem may be difficult, but expertise and analysis can usually produce an answer. In a complex situation, conditions keep changing, actions affect one another and important patterns may become visible only after something has been tried.
Managing complexity therefore means resisting false certainty, taking small and responsible steps, observing what actually happens and adjusting accordingly. The aim is not to control everything, but to learn quickly enough to act with better judgement as the situation unfolds.
