Learning that challenges underlying assumptions, beliefs, and mental models rather than simply improving actions.
Most learning focuses on improving performance within existing assumptions. When results are unsatisfactory, people adjust their actions, refine processes, or correct errors while leaving their underlying beliefs unchanged. Chris Argyris described this as Single-Loop Learning.
Double-Loop Learning occurs when people step back and question the assumptions, rules, values, and mental models that shape their actions.
Rather than asking: “How can we do this better?”
they ask: “Why are we doing it this way in the first place?”
This deeper form of learning can reveal hidden assumptions, challenge established practices, and open new possibilities for action.
In adaptive organisations, Double-Loop Learning is often triggered by surprises, failures, unintended consequences, conflicting perspectives, or encounters with reality that expose weaknesses in existing beliefs and understanding.
Gemba plays a critical role because it confronts people with the consequences of their assumptions. Learning occurs not simply through reflection, but through reflection informed by experience and consequence.
Double-Loop Learning is a key mechanism for organisational adaptation because it enables individuals, teams, and organisations to revise how they think, not merely what they do.
