Sensemaking and learning are inseparable.
Understanding is formed through interaction, but it is validated through action.
In the SECI cycle:
- Externalisation & Combination create shared understanding.
- Internalisation occurs only when that understanding is applied.
👉 Key principle:
- Agreement on a shared mental model is not validation.
- Testing in reality after implementation validates the model created through sensemaking.
👉 This requires:
- Following action through to consequence.
- Observing what actually happens (Gemba).
- Changing course based on outcomes — not what was planned.
👉 Without closing the loop:
- Sensemaking becomes abstract and theoretical.
- Fragility accumulates unnoticed.
- Unintended consequences remain hidden.
- Organisations believe they understand more than they do.
👉 Result:
Sensemaking becomes adaptive, grounded, and dependable
If it hasn’t been tested in action, it hasn’t been understood.
