Sensemaking and learning are inseparable.

Understanding is formed through interaction, but it is validated through action.

In the SECI cycle:

  • Externalisation & Combination create shared understanding.
  • Internalisation occurs only when that understanding is applied.

👉 Key principle:

  • Agreement on a shared mental model is not validation.
  • Testing in reality after implementation validates the model created through sensemaking.

👉 This requires:

  • Following action through to consequence.
  • Observing what actually happens (Gemba).
  • Changing course based on outcomes — not what was planned.

👉 Without closing the loop:

  • Sensemaking becomes abstract and theoretical.
  • Fragility accumulates unnoticed.
  • Unintended consequences remain hidden.
  • Organisations believe they understand more than they do.

👉 Result:
Sensemaking becomes adaptive, grounded, and dependable

If it hasn’t been tested in action, it hasn’t been understood.
