Business Process Management (BPM) is the discipline of understanding, designing, improving and governing the processes through which work is performed and outcomes are produced.
Business processes make visible how work flows across people, roles, systems, data, decisions and organisational boundaries. This allows problems such as poor hand-offs, duplication, hidden rework, unclear accountability and system workarounds to be understood in the context in which they occur.
BPM connects naturally with the Business Capability Model (BCM) and Common Data Model (CDM). The BCM describes what the organisation must be able to do; the CDM describes what it needs to know and manage; BPM describes how work flows to produce outcomes. Together they provide important structural foundations for the organisational Knowledge Base.
In an adaptive organisation, BPM is therefore more than process standardisation, efficiency and control. A process model is also a learning artefact: it makes operational reality available for questioning, improvement and reflection. When the documented process and what happens at Gemba diverge, the difference is information to learn from, not something to hide.
